Article Abstract:
The novel extracellular peroxidase-encoding cDNA sequence (npr) from Trametes versicolor has been cloned and studied. The transcript levels have been repressed by low levels of Mn2+ and have been induced by nitrogen and carbon. The deduced amino acid sequence of the NPR protein contains the 10 invariant residues of all members of the plant peroxidase family. T. versicolor is a white rot basidiomycete that produces a large number of peroxidases that degrade polymeric lignin. These peroxidases have been classified as lignin or manganese peroxidases.

Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to test whether physiologically occurring organic acids can minimize 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonate) cation radicals (ABTS++) in the presence and absence of manganese. An Amicon YM10 membrane was utilized to carry out ultrafiltration to separate ABTS++ from the enzyme. Results showed that ABTS++ can be reduced by oxalate, glyoxylate and malonate organic acids determined in the culture fluids of lignin-degrading fungi.

Article Abstract:
Microbiological research shows that laccase gene expression in the white rot fungus Trametes versicolor is determined by the presence of copper and nitrogen. Reverse transcription-PCR techniques were used to identify the impact of copper and nitrogen on gene transcription in fungal cultures. Significant increases in laccase activity are observed in the presence of copper. Laccase activity verses time over a fifteen-day period is shown in graphical form.
