Article Abstract:
A study conducted to determine the mutation rate in highly polymorphic DNA fingerprint loci in populations of the self-fertilizing hermaphroditic fish Rivulus marmoratus shows that the clones do not show mutations even after several generations. The mutation rate at the most unstable locus determined analyzing the variable number of tandem repeat variation was 3.52 x 10 to the -4th power. Thus the high genetic variation in these populations is not due to mutation but is probably due to high levels of migration in these populations.

Article Abstract:
The environmental induction of the male hermaphroditic killifish (Rivolus marmoratus) may have resulted in outcrossing in the fish population on Twin Cays, a small island adjacent to the Belize barrier reef. High levels of outcrossing were observed in the R. marmoratus population in the Twin Cays at least one generation prior to the sampling in 1991. Samples collected in 1991 showed the hermaphrodites to be multiply heterozygous for mini- and microsatellite loci through direct assay of their progeny.

Article Abstract:
Primers for thirty-six microsatellite loci were developed and employed to characterize genetic stocks and detect possible outcrossing between highly inbred laboratory strains of the self-fertilizing mangrove killifish. The laboratory findings experimentally confirmed that conspecific males can mediate occasional outcross events and that this process can release extensive genic heterozygosity.
