Cichlid species flocks of the past and present

Article Abstract:

The phylogeographical examination of east African river cichlid fish species has pinpointed the area of speciation to an extinct lake in Botswana. The discoveries demonstrate the power of molecular phylogeographic analyses and specifically show how geographically and temporally small-scaled evolutionary events combined with ecologically favorable conditions have a major and enduring effect on large-scale patterns of biodiversity.

Genetic and developmental basis for cichlid trophic diversity

Article Abstract:

Advances made in understanding the genetic and developmental mechanisms that underlie adaptive variation in cichlid jaw shape are reviewed. Findings from the review demonstrate the utility of the cichlid jaw as a model for studying the genetic and developmental basis of evolutionary changes in craniofacial morphology.

Two unlinked loci controlling the sex of blue tilapia (oreochromis aureus)

Article Abstract:

Sex determination in the blue tilapoia is considered to be a female heterogametic system controlled by a major gene. Analysis of epistatic interactions among the loci suggests the action of a dominant male repressor and a dominant male determiner.
