Article Abstract:
It has been found that p21 is a transcriptional target of HOXA10 in differentiating myelomonocytic cells and this is discussed in this research communication. The myeolomonocytic cell line U937 differentiates into macrophages, responding to various agents. Ectopic expression of either gene brings on U937 differentiation. A mechanism by which p21 and HOXA 10 may act in concert is described. In it HOXA10 can bind directly to the p21 promoter and with its trimeric partners PBS1 and MEIS1, activate p21 transcription resulting in cell cycle arrest and differentiation.

Article Abstract:
Study has shown a developmentally controlled maturation of chromatin likely to be independent of the end-state transcription factors controlling gene expression in differentiated cells. Chromatin fine structure profiles have been developed for a developmentally regulated gene. Reorganization of the lysozyme locus has been shown to be before trans-activator binding and gene expression. The chicken lysozyme locus is activated stepwise in myeloid differentiation and the locus is used as a model to study changes in chromatin structure in chicken cell lines representing various stages of macrophage differentiation and in primary transgenic mouse cells.

Article Abstract:
Control of synaptic choice in Caenorhabditis elegans is discussed based on the finding that UNC-4/UNC-37-dependent repression of motor neuron-specific genes is controlling. Drosophila Groucho is the founding member of a very conserved family of transcriptional corepressor proteins. An eh1-like repressor domain has been seen in nematode UNC-4 proteins and in UNC-4-like homologs of other species. UNC-4 and UNC-37 likely work together in VA motor neurons, repressing genes that bring on VB-type synaptic inputs.
