Chromatid segregation at anaphase requires the barren product, a novel chromosome-associated protein that interacts with topoisomerase II

Article Abstract:

The role of the barren (barr) gene in chromosome segregation during anaphase was analyzed in Drosophila barr mutants. The barr mutants exhibited massive anaphase bridging due to the failure of the chromosomes to segregate during mitosis. The Drosophila mutants also exhibited defective peripheral nervous systems due to the absence of sensory organ precursors which led to a loss of neurons in the embryo. The defective development of the nervous system indicated the role of the barr gene in regulating cytokinesis and chromatid segregation during the metaphase-anaphase stage.

A Drosophila neurexin is required for septate junction and blood-nerve barrier formation and function

Article Abstract:

A novel protein of cellular septate junctions was localized and characterized as a member of the Drosophila neurexin gene family. Neurexin IV (NRX) is a synapse-specific extracellular protein encoded by the nrx gene for cell adhesion. The role of NRX protein in neuromuscular communication was also exhibited in the Drosophila embryos with nrx gene mutations which exhibited reduced coordination of muscle propagation waves and defective neuronal connections.

The 55 kd regulatory subunit of Drosophila protein phosphatase 2A is required for anaphase

Article Abstract:

Drosophila protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) is composed of a 36 kd catalytic subunit, a 65 kd regulatory subunit and a subunit of either 54 or 55 kd (PR55). The gene coding for the PR55 subunit of PP2A was isolated and characterized. Mutational analysis showed that defects in the gene leads to two types of defects in the progression of anaphase. These results suggest that PP2A plays a role in mitosis.
