Chemostat enrichments of human feces with resistant starch are selective for adherent butyrate-producing clostridia at high dilution rates
Article Abstract:
Research reveals that chemostat cultures for bacterial enrichment may not account for some of the metabolically active bacteria growing simultaneously along with the main culture. Data indicate that in enrichment studies of butyrate-producing clostridia, using human fecal matter, no correlation is seen between the number of bacteria and the actual production of butyrate.

Effect of pH on an in vitro model of gastric microbiota in enteral nutrition patients
Article Abstract:
The efficacy of gastric acid as a barrier to overgrowth, the microbiota of gastric and duodenal aspirates was assessed and evaluated by cultured methods. The results showed that gastric acidity had a relatively small effect on the number of microorganisms recovered from intestinal aspirates but did influence microbiota composition.

Elderly patients are the subjects of this study where the fecal bacteria of patients living in a local community are compared with those who are hospitalized and who are undergoing antibiotic treatment. The results of the investigation are discussed.
