Characterization of two novel propachlor degradation pathways in two species of soil bacteria

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to isolate and characterize a soil bacterium, Acinetobacter strain BEM2, that can use the propachlor (2-chloro-N-isopropylacetanilide) herbicide as its sole and limiting carbon source. The study support and extend the metabolic pathways proposed previously for propachlor degradation by Pseudomonas strain. Results suggest that propachlor metabolism by Pseudoonas sp strain PEM1 proceeds through a different pathway from that induced by Acinetobacter sp strain BEM2.

Polymer production by Klebsiella pneumoniae 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid hydroxylase genes cloned in Escherichia coli

Article Abstract:

The Klebsiella pneumoniae hpaA and hpaH genes encoding 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (4-HPA) hydroxylase gene expressed in Escherichia coli activate the production of a polymer pigment. The K-12 derivative strains of E. coli form a dark brown polymer which has structural identity with microbial melanins. In the bacteria medium, 4-HPA hydroxylase transforms an aromatic compound to a melanin pigment. The 4-HPA hydroxylase has a low substrate specificity.

Propachlor removal by Pseudomonas strain GCH1 in an immobilized-cell system

Article Abstract:

Researchers describe a bioremediation system containing immobilized cells of Pseudomonas strain GCH1 adsorbed onto a ceramic support column. The cells removed 98% of the herbicide propachlor present in the system.
