Characterization of the methanotrophic bacterial community present in a trichloroethylene-contaminated subsurface groundwater site

Article Abstract:

Groundwater with trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) sampled from 13 monitoring wells at Area M at the US Department of Energy Savannah River Site near Aiken, South Carolina showed that the filtered samples were polluted with methane causing the isolation of 25 methanotrophic isolates. The phospholipid fatty acid profiles of the isolates were dominated by 18:1 omega 8c (60 to 80%). Phenotypic testing done later indicated that most of the strains were members of the genus Methylosinus.

Genotypic and phenotypic responses of a riverine microbial community to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contamination

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the genotypic and phenotypic responses of a riverine microbial community in the Little Scioto River to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination. PAH contamination, degradative gene frequency and microbial community structure were determined in sediments from both PAH-contaminated and ambient sediments. Results suggest that microbial community response to PAH contamination occurred at the genotypic and phenotypic levels.

Soluble methane monooxygenase production and trichloroethylene degradation by a type I methanotroph, Methylomonas methanica 68-1

Article Abstract:

The characterization of soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) in Methylomonas methanica 68-1 is discussed. The type I methanotroph was isolated from a trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated aquifer. TCE degradation kinetics and genetic homology were used as the parameters in the comparison of the methanotroph to Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b. Results indicate the existence of evolutionary diversification among sMMOs.
