Article Abstract:
Identification and characterization of the groEL and groES loci of Bifidobacterium breve UCC 2003 and Bifidobacterium lactis LMG 18906 is reported and the heat induction of these genes at transcriptional levels were explored by Northern blot hybridization and primer extension analysis. Northern blot analysis demonstrated that cspA gene is cotranscribed with the groEL gene, while the groES gene is transcribed as a monocistronic unit. It is concluded that the bifidobacterial groEL gene sequences could be used as an alternative to current methods for tracing Bifidobacterium species, particularly because they allow a high level of discrimination between closely related species of this genus.

Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to find out and characterize different amylolytic and pullulytic activities in different bifidobacteria by screening a number of different bifidobacterial species to determine their capacities to utilize starch, amylopectin, and pullulan as sole carbon and energy sources. It was found that starch, amylopectin, and pullulan can be utilized by some, but not all, bifidobacteria and that these organisms produce a number of different enzymatic activities not identified in bifidobacteria earlier.

Article Abstract:
This article describes three types of two-component signal transduction systems, as gene clusters, in Bifidobacterium infantis. Data indicate that each signal transduction system encoding locus specifies a histidine protein kinase and a corresponding response regulator. The expression of these transduction systems is growth dependent and exhibit homology to response regulators from other high G+C content bacteria.
