Characterization of novel carbazole catabolism genes from gram-positive carbazole degrader Nocardioides aromaticivorans IC177

Article Abstract:

The genes for carbazole degradation are characterized and the catabolic pathway of carbazole to anthranilate in a gram-positive bacterium is determined. Biotransformation analysis has showed that the Nocardioides aromaticivorans IC177 carbazole 1,9a-dioxygenase (CARDO) activity displays significant activities for naphthalene, carbazole and dibenzo-p-dioxin but less activity for dibenzofuran and biphenyl.

Purification and characterization of a novel bacteriocin produced by Enterococcus faecalis strain RJ-11

Article Abstract:

Research describes the production of the bacteriocin, enterocin RJ-11, from the lactic acid bacterium Enterococcus faecalis strain RJ-11. The purified enterocin RJ-11 is 5,000 daltons in a monomeric form, heat stable, and insensitive to acidic and alkaline conditions. However, it is susceptible to proteolysis. The amino acid sequence of the enterocin RJ-11 bears similarity to that of E. faecium.

High prevalence of VanA-type vancomycin-resistant enterococci in Austrian poultry

Article Abstract:

Fecal samples from humans and food-producing animals were analyzed for the presence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). The VRE carriage rate in humans was 6% and there was a predominance of VanC-type resistance and the Enterococcus faecium with vanA-mediated resistance was frequent in broiler chickens (42%) but rare in capital and pig samples.
