Article Abstract:
The ability of mass spectrometry combined with protein database was searched to characterize botulinum progenitor toxins, assign proteins to specific botulinum serotypes and strains based on available sequence information was examined. It was found that combined nanoscale chromoatographic and mass spectrometric techniques can characterize Clostridium botulinum progenitor toxin protein composition and that serotype/strain assignments based upon these proteins can provide accurate serotype.

Article Abstract:
The possibility of identifying and characterizing putative cultures of RW1 by peptide mass fingerprinting (PMF) targeting this characteristics phenotypic biomaker is explored. The results suggested that PMF of whole-cell extracts might be a promising technique for the identification and phenotypic characterization of certain microbial pure cultures offering high-abundance proteins composed of peptides with favorable ionization behavior.

Direct detection of phospholipids in gram-positive bacterial is tried by means of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) combined with the on-probe sample pretreatment. MALDI-MS has become a powerful method to characterize lipid components in bacterial cells.
