Article Abstract:
The phylogenetic analysis of the sequences from 24 anaerobic psychrophilic microbial communities from ice cores represents a diverse population of microbes with species of alpha, beta, and gamma Proteobacteria, Deinococcus group, gram-negative and gram-positive anaerobes, and spore- and nonspore producing microorganisms.

Article Abstract:
Psychrophilic microorganisms and cold-active glycoside hydrolases were investigated where numerous spore-forming psychrophilic bacteria were isolated to obtain phylogenetically related organisms with beta-galactosidases active on the chromogen 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indoyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside at low temperatures. It was suggested that the enzyme allow the organism to use these substrates in the environment and its low Km on indoxyl-beta-D-glucoside make it useful for producing indigo.
