Characterization of a forest soil metagenome clone that confers indirubin and indigo production on Escherichia coli
Article Abstract:
The microbial community analysis of forest soil from Jiadong Valley, Korea, by the culture-independent method has revealed that the most abundant rRNA genes are related to Acidobacteria, a major taxon with few cultures representatives. The corresponding genes were identified and characterized and it was found that these forest soil microbial genes were responsible for producing the pigment indirubin and its isomer, indigo blue, with antibacterial activity.

Putative polyketide synthase and laccase genes for biosynthesis of aurofusarin in Gibberella zeae
Article Abstract:
Genes encoding a type I polyketide synthase (PKS) (PKS12) and a putative laccase (Gip1) that are required for aurofusarin biosynthesis by Gibberella zeae are isolated. Targeted gene deletion and complementation analyses confirmed that both Gip1 and PKS12 are required for aurofusarin production in Gibberella zeae.

Forest soil metagenome gene cluster involved in antifungal activity expression in Escherichia coli
Article Abstract:
Saccharomyces cerevisiae is used as a target organism for isolating a metagenome clone with antifungal activity in Escherichia coli. The results have described the metagenomic approach as an alternative to search for novel antifungal antibiotics from uncultured soil bacteria
