Article Abstract:
An in situ carbon metabolism in an ecosystem comprising of predominantly phototrophic consortium Pelochromatium roseum is described. The mode of growth of the green sulfur bacterial epibionts indicates that it is photoautotrophic in nature. Identification of suitable biomarkers specific for the green sulfur bacterial epibionts and determination carbon isotope rations are discussed.

Article Abstract:
Different types of phototrophic consortia were mechanically isolated by micromanipulation from 14 freshwater environments, and partial 16S rRNA gene sequences of the green sulfur bacterial epibionts were determined. The results demonstrate that there is great diversity and nonrandom geographical distribution of phototrophic consortia in the natural environment.

Article Abstract:
The biomass, phylogenetic composition and photoautotrophic metabolism of green sulfur bacteria in the Black Sea are studied. The stable population of green sulfur bacteria in the Black Sea chemocline represents the most extremely low-light-adapted and slowest-growing type of phototroph known to date.
