Changes in the distribution and abundance of Waved Albatrosses at Isla Espanola, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Article Abstract:

A complete census of the Waved Albatross at Isla Espanola, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, in 1994 estimated the world population to be at least 18,200 breeding pairs. This represents a 52% increase compared to the 1970-1971 estimate of 12,000 breeding pairs. Two small inland colonies disappeared between 1971 and 1994. Estimates for two coastal colonies jumped by at least 138 and 335%, and one other large colony was stable from 1971 to 1994.

Synchronous underwater foraging behavior in penguins

Article Abstract:

The synchronous foraging behavior of northern rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome moseleyi) both at the surface and underwater has been investigated. The diving behavior of 14 females was observed for 1 to 3 consecutive days during the end of the chick guarding stage. The results showed that the penguins were in visual contact during the dives and displayed coordinated underwater behavior to search and cath preys.
