John Burdon Sanderson Haldane is popularly credited for developing Haldane's rule for interspecies hybrids and the Briggs-Haldane equations for enzyme kinetics. However, the field of genetics reaped far more than these fruits from this man's incisive and outspoken mind. He contributed much in developing methods for segregation and linkage analysis. He also foresaw the principles behind the maintenance of genetic polymorphism as well as the heterotrophic theory of the origin of life. Outspoken and dogmatic in public, he nevertheless maintained a generous and openminded attitude in science.

Geneticist Herman Joseph Muller became an instant celebrity with his first paper ever to be published entitled 'Artificial Transmutation of the Gene' which focused on gene mutation transpiring within the biological system. One of his earliest findings was that gene mutation caused cancer. He documented several chromosome rearrangements and more mutant genes that were discovered in Drosophila laboratories at the time. All his life, he crusaded against the irresponsible use of high-energy radiation which was based on his belief that there is a direct relationship between dose and mutation.

Erwin Schrodinger was awarded the Nobel Prize for his wave mechanics theory in physics, but geneticists remember him for his book 'What Is Life?'. His book influenced several outstanding scientists and greatly advanced the field of molecular biology. Schrodinger's interest in the gene and its stability attracted physical scientists to shift their interest to molecular genetics. He introduced a genetic problem to a fellow scientist that remains to be unsolved. The problem consisted of equations concerning the breeding of horned and hornless cattles.
