CatM regulation of the benABCDE operon: Functional divergence of two LysR-type paralogs in Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1

Article Abstract:

Studies were carried out on benABCDE operon to understand the evolution and retention of the benM and catM paralogs which are homologous transcriptional regulators involved in aromatic compound degradation. The results indicate that the frequency with which spontaneous mutations allow catM to substitute for benM might predict that one regulator would be sufficient for controlling benzoate consumption.

Transcriptional cross-regulation of the catechol and protocatechuate branches of the beta-ketoadipate pathway contributes to carbon source-dependent expression of the Acinetobacter sp. strain ADP1 pobA gene

Article Abstract:

Results suggest that the transcriptional regulators BenM and CatM inhibit pobA expression, the gene encoding the enzyme that catalyzes the first step in the degradation of 4-hydroxybenzoate, during growth on benzoate. Data indicate that these regulators may mediate their action by reducing the uptake of 4-hydroxybenzoate.

The degradation of prorocatechuate and quinate by Acinetobacter baylyi involves regulation of PcaU genes by three different promoters. There is crossregulation of pca-qui operon.
