Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that regulation of the Candida albicans ferric reductase gene is governed by the levels of iron and copper. Data indicate that this is a first report of a functional ferric reductase gene from this bacterium.

The Candida albicans CTR1 gene encodes a functional copper transporter

Article Abstract:

The copper uptake in Candida albicans is mediated by the gene CTRI, which encodes a 251 amino acid protein with a molecular weight of 27.8 kilodalton. Research describes the sequence, genetic regulation, and functional aspects of the gene and copper-binding motifs of the protein. Data indicate that CaCTRI is a copper transporter gene.

Candida albicans has a cell-associated ferric-reductase activity which is regulated in response to levels of iron and copper

Article Abstract:

Pathogenic organisms are able to survive in the human body because they have efficient mechanisms to procure biologically active ferrous iron from various sources within their host. However, these mechanisms have not been well studied. In the case of Candida albicans, clinical isolates of the pathogen indicate that it has a cell-associated, iron- and copper-mediated ferric-reductase activity that helps it to acquire iron inside the human body.
