Article Abstract:
A bacterial system that repeats a bimodal pattern of CTG amplification in E. coli is described. The amplification pattern occurs either as incremental changes in repeat size or as discrete saltatory expansions in repeat tracts measuring between 2kb and >6kb in length. It was found that replication temperature as well as tract orientation influenced the chance of CTG tract expansion. Furthermore, formation of noncanonical single-strand containing secondary structures with single strand regions in Okazaki fragments and/or double-strand breaks in repeat tracts are intermediates in CTG amplification.

This review examines the role microRNAs in the evolutionary processes of animal development as exemplified by their conservation and functional analogy among animals. Author discusses a Drosophila homolog of a developmental regulator in Caenorhabditis elegans, called hunch-back, which is operative downstream of the microRNAs controlling developmental timing.

Research demonstrates that lac operon of Escherichia coli exhibit adaptive amplification but the process does not produce any point mutations as is generally acknowledged. Data indicate that this non-relatedness results in the parallel operation of the processes leading to evolutionary advantages.
