Brown pigments produced by Yarrowia lipolytica result from extracellular accumulation of homogentisic acid

Article Abstract:

Researchers report the first known yeast that produces pigments from tyrosine involving the intermediate byproduct, homogentisic acid. This substance is metabolized to pyomelanins, which oxidize and polymerize to form brown pigment. The yeast is Yarrowia lipolytica, which causes brown discoloration of cheese.

Survival and epiphytic fitness of a nonpathogenic mutant of Xanthomonas campestris pv. glycines

Article Abstract:

Researchers used transposon mutagenesis to create a non-pathogenic strain of Xanthomonas campestris pv. glycines that can prevent bacterial pustule disease in soybeans. The population dynamics of the mutant strain were similar to that of the wild strain.

Biological role of xanthomonadin pigments in Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris

Article Abstract:

A group of pigments called xanthomonadins apparently protect Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris from damage caused by visible light. This phytopathogenic bacterium causes black rot of crucifers.
