Article Abstract:
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) committed $100 million to help build infrastructure for 12 translational (bench-to-bedside) research centers around the country where scientists and medical doctors would be able to train quickly on clinical research and regulatory requirements to fill shortage of well-trained researchers. NIH plans to have 60 translational research centers operational by 2012 which would act as consortium, enabling others to share and adopt the best ideas and methods.

Scientist Jennifer Elisseeff has shown how to make liquid cartilage and also the use of hydrogel polymer as a scaffold to regrow cartilage. Elisseeff has co-founded company called Cartilix with Norman Marcus that produces biomaterials for patients.
