Article Abstract:
Data are presented which indicate that the hydroxamate iron chelator produced by Agrobacterium rhizogenes K84 may be identical to a previously described antimicrobial substance called ALS84. Many bacterial and fungal siderophores have antimicrobial activity.

Article Abstract:
The distribution of plasmids in a collection of Spanish isolates of Agrobacterium tumefaciens from various hosts of different geographical and temporal origin was studied. All isolates contained plasmids ranging from one to five in number. Plasmid size was also variable, ranging from five to over 1,000 kDa. Plasmid profile analysis as a tool for determining the geographic origin of the isolates implicated in outbreaks of crown gall disease was not feasible. There was generally no correlation between plasmid profile characteristics and geographic origin of the isolate.

Article Abstract:
A comparison of the root colonization, crown gall control and plasmid transfer abilities of Agrobacterium radiobacter K84 and K1026 is discussed. Bacterial strains and plasmids were used for soil inoculations in biologically controlled experiments. Southern blotting and hybridization was performed. Data from the root colonization and biological control experiments were subjected to variance analysis. The effectiveness of strain K84 for biological control was demonstrated.
