Biodiversity of Lactococcus garvieae strains isolated from fish in Europe, Asia, and Australia

Article Abstract:

Restriction fragment length polymorphism ribotyping was used in studying the epidemiology of Lactococcus garvieae strains isolated from fish in Europe, Asia and Australia. L. garvieae is a major fish pathogen and causes fatal septicemia among fish species. Three biotypes were detected based on the results of the acidification of D-tagatose and sucrose. All the strains were serotyped as Lancefield group N. Ribotyping indicated that one clone was found both in Japan where it could have originated and in Italy where it could have been imported.

Enterotoxigenicity of Staphylococcus strains isolated from Spanish dry-curedhams

Article Abstract:

The presence of enterotoxigenic strains of Staphylococcus on Spanish dry-cured ham was determined by the reversed passive latex agglutination method. The results showed that of the S. aureus strains detected, 85.9% were enterotoxigenic. Of the enterotoxigenic strains, 54.3% produced enterotoxin A, while 32.7% produced more than one toxin. One of the two strains of S. epidermidis produced enterotoxin C. More types of enterotoxigenic strains were isolated from the slow dry-cured ham.

Potential of the polyvalent anti-staphylococcus bacteriophage K for control of antibiotic-resistant staphylococci from hospitals

Article Abstract:

The study assessed a lytic bacteriophage (phage K) in vitro for its ability to inhibit emerging drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains from hospitals and other species of Staphylococcus isolated from bovine infections. The findings suggested that infusion of the phage into a nonimmunogenic bismuth-based cream resulted in strong anti-Staphylococcus activity from the cream on plates and in broth.
