Article Abstract:
Oil exploration causes huge volumes of oily wastewater and produced waters show a wide range of salinities with spilled brine inhibiting plant growth. A highly enriched halophilic culture was established with benzene as the sole carbon source using brine soil obtained from an oil production facility and community structure analysis showed that Marinobacter spp. was a dominant member of the enrichment.

Article Abstract:
The sequences, cloning, recombinant expression and purification of the iminodisuccinate (IDS)-converting enzymes are reported. The ite gene, encoding the IDS-transforming epimerase, and the genes [icl.sub.b] and [icl.sub.s], encoding the IDS-converting BY6-lyase and SLRS7-lyase, are cloned and sequenced. The epimerase gene encodes a protein with a predicted subunit molecular mass of 47.6 kDa.

Article Abstract:
Culture-based and culture-independent techniques used to investigate the bacterial diversity and function in aerobic phenol-degrading granules cultivated in a sequencing batch reactor are discussed. A functional model of the microbial community in the aerobic granules is proposed, which could be useful in developing optimal control and management strategies for aerobic granulation systems.
