Biodegradation of atrazine by Agrobacterium radiobacter J14a and use of this strain in bioremediation of contaminated soil

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to determine the factors governing the biodegradation of atrazine by Agrobacterium radiobacter J14a and to analyze its potential effectiveness in degrading atrazine in soil. Agrobacterium radiobacter J14a was isolated and characterized and the effects of secondary carbon and nitrogen substrates on atrazine degradation in culture and in soils were analyzed. The enhanced degradation obtained from J14a in the soil suggests that an effective bioaugmentation can occur at lower inoculum levels.

Fate of Agrobacterium radiobacter K84 in the environment

Article Abstract:

Agrobacterium radiobacter K84 is widely used as a biological control agent against Agrobacterium tumefaciens, the crown gall tumor pathogen. Antibiotic resistant mutants of K84 were used to monitor the survival and and dissemination of K84 in the field. The results showed that K84 could coexist in the rhizosphere up to a period of two years and was laterally disseminated. The bacterium also persisted in crown gall tissue, rhizosphere and for limited periods, in surface water.

Attachment of Agrobacterium tumefaciens B6 and A. radiobacter K84 to tomato root tips

Article Abstract:

The binding strain of Agrobacterium tumefaciens B6 to the in vitro cultured tomato root tips is greater than that of the avirulent Agrobacterium radiobacter strain K84. The latter is unable to block the attachment of the former to the tomato root tips pre-incubated with K84. This suggests that the efficiency in the biocontrol of agrocin 84-resistant strains by K84 is not related to the competition for binding to the plant root surface.
