Biocontrol of Rhizoctonia solani damping-off of tomato with Bacillus subtilis RB14

Article Abstract:

Bacillus subtilis RB14 produces the antibiotics iturin A and surfactin which suppress the damping off of tomato seedlings caused by Rhizoctonia solani. Cell suspensions and culture broths of B. subtilis RB14-C, a mutant of RB14, suppress the damping off. The suppressibility is low in case of R-delta-1 which contains a mutation in the gene lpa-14 that encodes the antibiotics. A transformant of R-delta-1 and the plasmid pC115 containing lpa-14 has a high amount of disease suppressibility.

Polymorphism of genes coding for nuclear 18S rRNA indicates genetic distinctiveness of anastomosis group 10 from other groups in the Rhizoctonia solani species complex

Article Abstract:

The DNA restriction maps of the nuclear 18S rRNA region for 25 intraspecific groups (ISGs) which represents 10 anastomosis groups (AGs) of the plant pathogenic fungi, Rhizoctonia solani species, show four different types of maps which are described. The DNA of most of the ISGs are similar but differ from that of AG 10A and AG 10B. Thus the AG 10 isolates are different from the other AGs.

Induction of laccase activity in Rhizoctonia solani by antagonistic Pseudomonas fluorescens strains and a range of chemical treatments

Article Abstract:

The phytopathogenic fungus Rhizoctonia solani produces the phenoloxidase enzyme laccase when challenged by antifungal metabolites produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens. This response is most likely caused by calcium or heat shock signaling.
