Biocontrol of Escherichia coli O157 with O157-specific bacteriophages

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the biocontrol of Escherichia coli O157 with O157-specific bacteriophages. Three bacteriophages, designated KH1, KH4 and KH5, were isolated and their ability to lyse laboratory cultures of E coli O157 was evaluated. Results indicate that virulent O157 antigen-specific phages could play a role in biocontrol of E coli O157:H7 in animals and fresh foods without compromising the viability of other normal flora or food quality.

Emergence of biofilm-forming subpopulations upon exposure of Escherichia coli to environmental bacteriophages

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the exposure of Escherichia coli MG1655 to environmental bacteriophages. It was observed that this exposure resulted in rapid selection for phage-tolerant subpopulations displaying increased biofilm formation.
