Biocidal activity of formaldehyde and nonformaldehyde biocides toward Mycobacterium immunogenum and Pseudomonas fluorescens in pure and mixed suspensions in synthetic metalworking fluid and saline

Article Abstract:

The potential effectiveness of the commonly used commercial formaldehyde (HCHO) and nonformaldehyde (non-HCHO) biocides in metalworking fluids against two widely recognized bacterial genera of occupational health concern, Mycobacterium and Pseudomonas, is investigated. The results indicate that Mycobacterium immunogenum is more resistant than Pseudomonas fluorescens to the tested formaldehyde-releasing biocides and phenolic biocide.

Persistence of Mycobacterium parabacterium during manufacture and ripening of Cheddar cheese

Article Abstract:

The persistence of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis during the manufacture and ripening of Cheddar cheese with a laboratory-scale Cheddar cheese production system, simulating commercial Cheddar production was studied. The results, with a reference strain and field isolates, indicate minimal inactivation during the manufacturing process and up to 10-fold concentration following microbial entrapment and synthesis of the curd.

Diversity of nontuberculoid mycobacterium species in biofilms of urban and semiurban drinking water distribution systems

Article Abstract:

Various nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are isolated from biofilms in drinking water distribution systems in two urban and two semiurban areas in South Africa. The results reveal that most of the isolates belonged to opportunistic pathogenic species of the NTM group and none of them belonged to the Mycobacterium avium complex.
