Analysis of partner of inscuteable (pins)(ital) has found two distinct steps in inscuteable apical localization. One is a pins-independent, bazooka-dependent initiation step in delamination or interphase. The other is a later maintenance step in which Pins, Baz and Insc localization are interdependent. There may be more. The gene has a novel role in Drosophila asymmetric division. Partner of Inscuteable (Pins) is a new component of asymmetric divisions. It appears that pins is required for all aspects of insc function.

Article Abstract:
Researchers have investigated the distribution of pros and insc RNAs during the NB cell cycle in order to establish whether the asymmetric NB cell divisions include asymmetric RNA localization as part of overall strategy. It was found that in NBs pros RNA is apically localized during late interphase when both Insc and Stau proteins are also enriched on the apical cortex. It was concluded that Insc is a protein which nucleates the formation of an RNA/protein complex that has a role in a range of processes.

Article Abstract:
Asymmetric cell division in developing tissues takes place often and produces cell diversity. Through interaction of Notch (N) signaling and Numb, the intrinsic fate determinant, binary fate decision of two pairs of sibling neurons is achieved. Binary sibling neuron cell fate determinations in Drosophila's embryonic central nervous system are nonstochastic. They must have inscuteable-mediated asymmetry for ganglion mother cells.
