Beijing and the 18th International Congress of Genetics: dilemmas and opportunities

Article Abstract:

The decision of geneticists to hold the 18th International Congress of Genetics in Beijing, China, is a controversial issue since the choice of venues for international conventions reflects the seemingly acceptability of the country's present regime. The Chinese government is known to have one of the worst human rights violations records in the world. However, the choice of China as the venue for this important scientific meeting will provide the Chinese geneticists a means of contact with their western counterparts. It will also encourage intercultural linkages which will help in the advancement of the field of genetics.

Nonetheless, the self correcting nature of science guarantees that incorrect statements will inevitably be dropped, regardless of who made them.
