Apparent contradiction: psychrotolerant bacteria from hydrocarbon-contaminated Arctic tundra soils that degrade diterpenoids synthesized by trees

Article Abstract:

Researchers have discovered that hydrocarbon-contaminated Arctic soils have been selectively enriched with psychrotolerant bacteria that can degrade resin acids as well as hydrocarbons even though the Arctic is devoid of trees that produce resin acids. These bacteria could be useful in pulp mills where low temperatures may prevail during the winter.

Bacterial diversity and community structure in an aerated lagoon revealed by ribosomal intergenic spacer analyses and 16S ribosomal DNA sequencing

Article Abstract:

Researchers used ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis and 16S ribosomal DNA sequencing to show that bacterial diversity increases from the beginning to the end of aerated lagoons used for biotreatment of municipal and industrial waste. Community pioneers include thermotolerant, microaerophilic methanol-oxidizing and nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

Unexpectedly high bacterial diversity in arctic tundra relative to boreal forest soils, revealed by serial analysis of ribosomal sequence tags

Article Abstract:

Serial analysis of ribosomal sequence tags and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis are used to compare composite soil samples taken from boreal and arctic biomes. Bacterial diversity estimates are greater for undisturbed arctic tundra soil samples than for boreal forest soil samples, with the highest diversity associated with a sample from an extreme northern location.
