Bacterial chemotaxis: Rhodobacter sphaeroides and Sinorhizobium meliloti - variations on a theme?

Article Abstract:

Chemotaxis in Rhodobacter sphaeroides and Sinorhizobium meliloti has a direct link to the environment in which a cell finds itself. The presence of at least two CheY homologues and the discovery that the swimming speed of these bacteria can vary indicate a different control mechanism at the flagellar motor. However, it remains to be understood why R sphaeroides should have at least two functional sets of genes encoding homologues of the enteric chemosensory pathway.

The behavioural response of anaerobic Rhodobacter sphaeroides to temporal stimuli

Article Abstract:

The sensory response of Rhodobacter sphaeroides is investigated to characterize the behavior of individual cells facing a temporal change in the concentration of chemoeffectors and encountering stimuli affecting electron transport. Populations of photosynthetically grown tethered cells of Rhodobacter sphaeroides are used to study the sensory response. Results indicate that response only shows up if there is a corresponding decline in attractant concentration.

Behavioral responses of Rhodobacter sphaeroides to linear gradients of the nutrients succinate and acetate

Article Abstract:

Rhodobacter sphaeroides cells respond to acetate concentrations as low as 1 nM/s and to succinate concentrations as low as 5 nM/s. Increasing and decreasing concentration gradients of these nutrients caused changes in the flagellum motor speed and the smoothness of motor rotation.
