Article Abstract:
The mutS and mutL genes of Bacillus subtilis appear to be organized in a single operon found immediately downstream of the cotE gene. It is the first time that such an organization could be beneficial to the cell, leading to the coordinate expression of two proteins involved in mismatch repair. The deduced MutS protein is 49% identical to HexA and MutL is 46% identical to HexB of Streptococcus pneumoniae. An increase in the frequency of spontaneous mutations and the elimination of the marker effect in transformation was observed following the deletion of the genes.

Article Abstract:
The 20 kb nucleotide sequence that is contiguous to the 5' end of the pksX locus of 13.6 kb contains six open reading frames (ORFs). The products of the ORFs resemble proteins that participate in polyketide and polypeptide synthesis or in fatty acid metabolism. Three nucleotide regions match the Aspergillus nidulans wA gene that is essential for polyketide pigment synthesis. The similarities indicate that the 13.6kb pksX region and the 20kb region belong to the same locus, which participates in secondary metabolism.

Article Abstract:
The nucleotide reductase (nrd) locus of Bacillus subtilis (BS) was cloned and sequenced by the isolation and characterization of the ts-A13 temperature sensitive mutant from a plasmid bank of BS genome. The BS nrd locus which encodes bacterial ribonucleoside diphosphatase exhibits short open reading frames that are less than 279 bp with an omicronA promoter at nt 51-80. A hairpin-loop structure was also detected at the nt 745-776 of the BS nrd locus.
