Avian hairy gene expression identifies a molecular clock linked to vertebrate segmentation and somitogenesis

Article Abstract:

C-hairy1, the avian homolog of the Drosophila segmentation gene, has been identified and characterized. Its mRNA exhibits cyclic waves of expression which are due to coordinated pulses rather than cell displacement. This is evidence of a developmental clock linked to segmentation and somitogenesis of the paraxial mesoderm. Also, the segmentation mechanisms used by vertebrates and invertebrates may be conserved.

FGF signaling controls somite boundary position and regulates segmentation clock control of spatiotemporal Hox gene activation

Article Abstract:

Results suggest that FGF8, which is expressed in the posterior presomitic mesoderm, coordinates the segmentation process and spatiotemporal Hox gene activation. Data indicate that Hox gene expression is restricted to somites.
