Attached and unattached bacterial communities in a 120-meter corehole in an acidic, crystalline rock aquifer

Article Abstract:

There is a difference between attached and unattached microbial populations in soil and groundwater, respectively. Researchers who analyzed core samples taken from buried chalcopyrite ore and groundwater found more diverse neutrophilic heterotrophs in the ore and less diverse neutrophilic heterotrophs in groundwater.

Attached and unattached microbial communities in a simulated basalt aquifer under fracture- and porous-flow conditions

Article Abstract:

Researchers need to take account of attached and unattached microbial communities when planning bioremediation projects. These attachments could segregate microbial communities and influence the movement of contaminants.

Diversity of oxygenase genes from methane- and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in the eastern Snake River plain aquifer

Article Abstract:

The characterization of in situ methane- and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria from free-living and attached communities in the Eastern Snake River Plain aquifer is presented using PCR amplification, restriction fragment length polymorphism, and phylogenetic analysis of oxygenase genes. Metagenomic DNA from each community is amplified to assess its applicability for generating unbiased metagenomic template DNA using whole-genome amplification (WGA).
