Article Abstract:
The isolation of a gene, atonal (ato), proves that it is a proneural gene needed for the development of chordotonal organs, contradicting previous indications that only the development of the precursor of external sense organs needs the proneural genes of the achaete-scute complex (ASC) in the Drosophila peripheral nervous system. The ectopic expression of the ASC genes enhances the development of external sense organs, and selectively enhances the development of chordotonal organs, proving that neuronal identity is significantly influenced by proneural genes.

Article Abstract:
The cell membrane-associated protein Numb is asymmetrically distributed between two daughter cells conferring distinct daughter cell fates during mitosis of multiple types of precursor cells in Drosophila.Partner of Numb (PON) has been identified as a novel gene product which is asymmetrically localized during mitosis and colocalizes with Numb. Numb localization in muscle progenitors is disrupted by loss of pon function. PON responds to polarity cues in neural precursors and epithelial cells.

A group of genes acting maternally is required to establish the dorsal-ventral asymmetry of the Drosophila embryo. Rhomboid encodes a protein that is situated on the apical surface of the dorsal-anterior follicle cells encircling the oocyte. Any lapse in the rho function results in the ventralization of the eggshell and the embryo, but ectopic expression leads to dorsalization of both structures. Spatially restricted rho is imperative for the formation of the dorsal-ventral axis.
