Assignment of hitherto unidentified 16S rDNA species to a main line of descent within the domain Bacteria

Article Abstract:

A 16S rDNA sequence of a bacteria from a novel clone group isolated from an Australian soil sample is 86.1% to 86.5% similar to the 16S rDNA of Verrucomicrobium spinosum. V. spinosum is a prosthecate but has fimbrae and unique DNA sequences. V. spinosum is a distinct lineage in the Bacteria domain and is related to the planctomycetes and chlamydia strains. The bacteria bear 91.3% to 98.25% similarity among themselves. These bacteria are also related to planctomycetes and chlamydia.

Phylogenetic analysis of the genera Rhodococcus and Nocardia and evidence for the evolutionary origin of the genus Nocardia from within the radiation of Rhodococcus species

Article Abstract:

Examination of the evolutionary origin of the genera Rhodococcus and Nocardia by performing 16S rRNA analysis on 32 strains of 26 species of these genera reveals the presence of six phylogenetically equidistant lineages in the genus Rhodococcus. The genus Nocardia is suggested to be derived from a Rhodococcus ancestor. A cyclic component in menaquinone of the MK-8(H4) type is the major phenotypic feature, which separates the species of Nocardia from Rhodococcus species.

Effect of genome size and rrn gene copy number on PCR amplification of 16s rRNA genes from a mixture of bacterial species

Article Abstract:

A study of the effect of genome size and the number of rrn genes on the amount of PCR by gene amplification shows that majority of bacterial species are uncultured and inaccurate results are obtained by using these methods for quantification of microbial community by 16s rRNA.
