Approaches to defining the ancestral eukaryotic protein complexome

Article Abstract:

Available information about the ancestral eukaryotic protein complexome, which is a set of protein complexes that extant eukaryotes inherited from their last common ancestors, is integrated and summarized into a virtual primitive eukaryote termed Eukaryotic Virtual Ancestor (EVA). In conditions of stability of ancestral eukaryotic complexome, use of EVA in the formulation of mathematical systems that aim to simulate biological processes, is proposed.

Proteasome and transcription: A destroyer goes into construction

Article Abstract:

Studies indicating the nonproteolytic implication of proteolytic complex proteasome, in the regulation of transcription in the eucaryotic cells, are reviewed. Studies have revealed that proteasome, otherwise known for degrading proteins by attaching ubiquitin in the proteasome pathway, can be modulated by phosphorylation or other means for additional regulation of transcription.

Selective forces for the origin of the eukaryotic nucleus

Article Abstract:

The origin of the eukaryotic cell nucleus and the selective forces that drive its evolution that remain unknown is discussed. An evolutionary scenario that reconciles both an ancestral endosymbiotic origin of the eukaryotic nucleus with an autogenous generation of the contemporary nuclear membrane and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) from the bacterial membrane is proposed.
