Article Abstract:

Researchers used genetic engineering to suppress the production of non-clavulanic acid clavams by Streptomyces clavuligerus. This bacterium is used to produce clavulanic acid, an antibiotic that can inhibit beta lactamases. It is used clinically in combination with beta lactam antibiotics.

Removal of nitrate from groundwater by cyanobacteria: quantitative assessment of factors influencing nitrate uptake

Article Abstract:

Two Synechocystis spp. and a Synechococcus sp. were able to remove nitrate from contaminated groundwater. They belong to a class of bacteria called cyanobacteria and may be effective at nitrate removal of polluted water in large-scale applications.

Increased production of zeaxanthin and other pigments by application of genetic engineering techniques to Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803

Article Abstract:

The overproduction of zeaxanthin and other carotenoid pigments by Synechocystis sp. is described. This method can be used to produce carotenoids for the food industry. As antioxidants, carotenoids may prevent certain diseases.
