Article Abstract:
The application of stereolithographic models and the integration of three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann simulations to microbiological studies are reported. Several models with a variety of internal configurations are designed, fabricated and used to examine the impact of biomass accumulation and microbially induced calcite precipitation on fluid flow.

Article Abstract:
Cell-free supernatants from growing Bacillus cereus strain ATCC 10987 induced luminescence in a Photorhabdus luminescens (delta)luxS mutant, indicating the production of functional auto inducer 2(AI-2). It was observed that AI-2 had an inhibitory effect on biofilm formation by B. cereus and promoted release of the cells from a performed biofilm.

Article Abstract:
The architecture of a Sphingomonas biofilm was studied using strain L138, a gfp-tagged derivative of Sphingomonas sp. strain LB126, as a model organism and flow cells and confocal laser scanning microscopy as experimental tools. Sphingomonas sp. strain L138 biofilm architecture consisted of micro-colonies and extensive water channels.
