Antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes of Escherichia coli isolates from swine in Ontario

Article Abstract:

A total of 318 Escherichia coli isolates obtained from diarrheic and healthy pigs in Ontario from 2001 to 2003 are examined for their susceptibility to 19 antimicrobial agents. Antimicrobial resistance frequency among Escherichia coli isolates from swine Ontario are moderate in comparison with other countries and is higher in isolates from pigs with diarrhea than in isolates from healthy finisher pigs.

Mycotoxin fumonisin B(sub)1 increases intestinal colonization by pathogenic Escherichia coli in pigs

Article Abstract:

Research shows that ingestion of fumonisin B(sub)1 mycotoxin by pigs leads to increased colonization of the small and large intestines by the extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli. However, fumonisin B(sub1 minimally affects animal weight gain, does not cause any lesions, and does not change plasma biochemical pattern.

Comparative analysis of virulence genes, genetic diversity, and phylogeny of commensal and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli isolates from weaned pigs

Article Abstract:

The virulence genes for extraintestinal infections are present in the clonal clusters of commensal enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli found in the gastrointestinal tracts of pigs. The diversity of bacterial strains isolated in the clustering analysis proves its infection potential against the host selection pressure.
