Antibiotic resistances of starter and probiotic strains of lactic acid bacteria

Article Abstract:

The antibiotic resistance of 45 lactic acid bacteria strains belonging to the genera Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Lactococcus, Pediococcus and Leuconostoc were investigated to determine their antibiotic resistance at genetic level. The findings demonstrate the problems encountered with resistance testing such as inadequately identified breakpoint values, silent resistance genes, and the genetic basis and associated resistance mechanism toward some antibiotics which are still unknown.

Application of the shsp gene, encoding a small heat shock protein, as a food-grade selection marker for lactic acid bacteria

Article Abstract:

The authors desribe the study of shsp gene which serves as a food-grade marker in Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactococcus lactis. They report the construction of S. thermophilus plasmid which carries shsp gene, and the transformation of this plasmid into different S. thermophilus strains via the use of shsp as a selection marker.

Survival of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophillus in the terminal ileum of fistulated Gottingen minipigs

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on the yogurt containing living Streptococcus thermophillus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus which have been fed to minipigs. The use of a PCR-based approach and the phenotypic identification methods in recovering these microorganisms alive from the ileostomy contents are described.
