Fur-independent regulatin of iron metabolism by Irr in Bradyrhizobium japonicum

Article Abstract:

The Fur protein is not required for iron metabolism in Bradyrhizobium japonicum. This organism produces two iron-regulating proteins, Fur and Irr. Both proteins are involved in the regulation of heme biosynthesis.

The Bradyrhizobium japonicum proline biosynthesis gene proC is essential for symbiosis

Article Abstract:

A strain of Bradyrhizobium japonicum that lacks the gene for proline biosynthesis cannot develop nodules on soybeans and cannot fix nitrogen. This indicates that the proline provided by the host plant is not sufficient and therefore must not be the only energy source for the bacterium.

Analysis of the Bradyrhizobium japonicum hemH gene and its expression in Escherichia coli

Article Abstract:

Complementation analysis indicates that the Bradyrhizobium japonicum hemH gene is essential to free mutant strains I110ek4 and I110bk2 with respect to hemin auxotrophy, protoporphyrin accumulation and the lack in ferrochelatase activity. Its expression in Escherichia coli give 39-kDa proteins. The overexpressed protein indicates ferrochelatase activity, implying that the hemH gene encodes ferrochelatase. The B. japonicum hemH gene complements the Escherichia coli mutant by exhibiting hemin prototrophy, loss of protoporphyrin accumulation and expression of ferrochelatase activity.
