Analysis of a Caenorhabditis elegans Twist homolog identifies conserved and divergent aspects of mesodermal patterning

Article Abstract:

In mesodermal development cells become specialized in increments to form specific tissue types. It is a stepwise process. Analysis of a Caenorhabditis elegans Twist homolog identified aspects of mesodermal patterning that are both divergent and conserved. The activity pattern of the gene that codes for CeTwist has been studied through immunofluorescence and reporter fusions. It may be that a conserved pathway is in effect for different functions in specification for the mesoderm.

ELAV tumor antigen, Hel-N1, increases translation of neurofilament M mRNA and induces formation of neurites in human teratocarcinoma cells

Article Abstract:

The translation and/or stability of AU-rich sequence element (ARE)-containing mRNAs can be independently regulated by the ELAV protein Hel-N1. Hel-N1 is an ELAV tumor antigen that increases translation of neurofilament M mRNA. It also helps neurites form in human teratocarcinoma cells. It appears that turnover of NF-M mRNA was not affected by Hel-N1 expression although Hel-N1 can bind to the 3' UTR of NF-M mRNA. Hel-N1 is directly associated with NF-M mRNA in transfected cells.

Transient gene asymmetry during sporulation and establishment of cell specificity in Bacillus subtilis

Article Abstract:

It appears that in Bacillus subtilis transient genetic asymmetry is the means for release of SpoIIE phosphatase activity in the forespore and that it establishes cell specificity. Sporulation is started by asymmetric division that generates two cells with different sizes and fates. If the gene for sigma-super-F, the forespore-specific transcription factor is moved in the trapped region of the chromosome, spores are produced even in the absence of two essential activators.
