Article Abstract:
Experiments involving phenol-fed activated sludge revealed that the outbreak of nonflocculating catabolic phenol-degrading bacteria populations caused the breakdown of the activated-sludge process. A competitive polymerase chain reaction analysis involving the use of gyrB sequences revealed that population structure in activated-sludge remained stable for 10 days after the introduction of phenol which was done a the rate of 0.4 g per liter per day.

Article Abstract:
Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were quantified in flocculent and aerobic granular sludge developed in two sequencing batch reactors with the same shear force but different settling times. The chemical extraction data was confirmed and it was indicated that granule formation and stability are dependent on a noncellular, protein core.

Article Abstract:
Results reveal that eight of the 32 nonflocculating bacteria coaggregate with Acinetobacter johnsonii S35 and four to a lesser degree with A. junii S33. Data indicate that cellular properties of the coaggregating partners influence the pattern and size of coaggregation.
