Article Abstract:
The impact of the interaction between bacteria and amoebae on the evolution of intracellular bacterial pathogens of humans by focusing on the stable association of free-living amoebae with their obligate endosymbionts and the transient interaction between Legionella pneumophila and amoebae as a model system is reviewed. It is concluded that the interaction shows strong similarity with processes that occur during infection of mammalian cells by legionellae.

Article Abstract:
The cell-density-dependent regulatory response or quorum sensing involves the production of N-acyl homoserine lactone signal molecules in Burkholderia cepacia ATCC 25416. Research indicates that the quorum sensing in B. cepacia affects the sigma factor gene rpoS expression in a negative fashion. Furthermore, the rpoS-null mutants show no change in the accumulation of the homoserine lactone molecules.

The characterization of Cryptococcus gattii isolates from tree surfaces, soils, air, freshwater, and seawater indicates extensive colonization within British Columbia, confirming the expansion of the ecological niche of Cryptococcus gattii to temperate regions and acidic soil.
