Article Abstract:
A dominant issue in studies of different immune response mechanisms has concerned the identity of signaling proteins that couple proximal kinases with downstream pathways such as the activation of the GTP binding proteins Ras, Rac and Rho and the Ca2+ dependent calcineurin pathway. Studies have identified an array of immune cell restricted adaptors which lack enzymatic and transcriptional domains but have multiple motifs/domains that enable binding to other proteins. More research will lead to more discoveries in unraveling the interconnections responsible for different immune responses.

Article Abstract:
The identification of a novel protein termed mitochondrial antiviral signaling (MAVS), which mediates the activation of NF-(sub K)B and IRF3 in response to viral infection is reported. Epistasis experiments reveal that MAVS is required for the phosphorylation of IRF3 and I(sub K)B and functions downstream of RIG-I, an intracellular receptor for viral RNA.

Article Abstract:
The dynamic behavior (fusion and fission) of mitochondria is studied, as it is very important in development and disease. The classic mitochondrial disorders, dynamics, mtDNA mutations, neurodegeneration, aging and metabolic disorders are discussed.
