Article Abstract:
The expression of genes required for oxygen metabolic systems is investigated using two species, Clostridium aminovalericum and C. acetobutylicum. The expression studies of the C. aminovalericum noxA (H2O-forming NADH oxidase) gene have revealed that the enzyme is involved in oxygen metabolism and in C. acetobutylicum many genes were identified as oxygen stress responsive for the first time in the genus Clostridium.

Article Abstract:
The effects of [O.sub.2] on Bifidobacterium species was investigated using liquid shaking cultures under various [O.sub.2] concentrations. It was observed that [H.sub.2]O-forming NADH oxidase activities were detected dominantly in cell extracts of B. boum and B. thermophilum under acidic reaction conditions.

Article Abstract:
The requirement for C[O.sub.2] for colony formation by Bifidobacterium species in both anoxic and oxic environments is studied. The findings reveal that though C[O.sub.2] is not essential for colony development, it stimulates colony development in Bifidobacterium boum.
