Adaptive response of Schizosaccharomyces pombe to hydrogen peroxide and menadione

Article Abstract:

Pretreatment of Schizosaccharomyces pombe cells to sublethal concentrations of H2O2 and menadione (MD) induces resistance to oxidative stresses. The resistance is due to the induction of antioxidant enzymes. MD-induced resistance is greater than H2O2-induced resistance probably because MD increases the production of wider variety of enzymes. The GSH/GSSG ratio of the cells also increases. Cells in a stationary phase are more resistant than those in an exponential phase due to higher levels of the antioxidant enzymes.

Enzyme evolution in Rhodobacter sphaeroides: selection of a mutant expressing a new galactitol dehydrogenase and biochemical characterization of the enzyme

Article Abstract:

A functional mutant of Rhodobacter (R.) sphaeroides Si4 that can grow on galactitol, produces large quantities of a galactitol dehydrogenase (GDH). The N-terminal amino-acid sequence of the GDH reveals that it is a new enzyme as it exhibits properties different from other polyol dehydrogenases. Characterization of the enzyme indicates that it is a tetramer and though specific for AND (super +), catalyzes the oxidation of many sugar alcohols diols and secondary alcohols.

NAD(P)H:menadione oxidoreductase of the amitochondriate eukayote Giardia lamblia: a simpler homologue of the vertebrate enzyme

Article Abstract:

Results show that purified recombinant NAD(P)H:menadione oxidoreductase exhibits typical oxidoreductase activities with NADPH serving as its electron donor. Data also indicate that the enzyme possesses high amino acid sequence similarity to its vertebrate homologues.
