Article Abstract:
The abundance of Shiga toxin 2-containing (Stx-2) phages produced from enterohemorrhagic (EHEC) Escherichia coli in contaminated water is described. Amplified DNAs of 378 bp were observed in the positive controls, bacteria and the bacteriophages after first-round polymerase chain reaction of the Stx 2 gene. Microtiter cytotoxicity assay was used to determine the presence of Vero cell cytotoxicity in the supernatants of enrichment cultures. Results showed that the high level of Stx 2 phages from EHEC E. coli exacerbates their abilities to infect E. coli O157:H7.

Article Abstract:
The presence of bacteriophages in enrichment cultures produced a significant reduction in the number of these bacteria compared with samples in which bacteriophages were reduced by filtration through 0.45-mum non-protein-binding membranes. It indicated that the Salmonella biotypes isolated after the enrichment culture change if bacteriophages are present, thus distorting the results of the analysis.

Article Abstract:
A report is made on this study which shows the prevalence and isolation of bacteria carrying the Shiga toxins in human sewage. This analysis showed the prevalence of one gene carrying colony per 1000 fecal coliform colonies in sewage.
